How flat garments behave

Flat garments are hooped on a relatively level plane. The digitizer still needs to control stretch, texture, density, and pull, but the design is not wrapping around a curved crown or crossing a heavy center seam.

What changes on a cap

Structured caps introduce a curved surface and often a center seam. The cap frame can move differently from a flat hoop, and the sewing field may be shorter. Registration problems become more visible as a design approaches the crown or seam.

  • Center-out sequencing can reduce distortion
  • Bottom-up construction can help manage the crown
  • Small text may need more space
  • The center seam may require reinforcement or repositioning
  • Tall designs may exceed the practical sewing field

Structured, unstructured, and knit styles

A structured baseball cap, soft unstructured cap, foam-front trucker cap, visor, and beanie do not behave identically. Share the exact product whenever possible. A photo and manufacturer style number can help the digitizer anticipate construction.

When 3D puff is involved

Foam adds another layer of planning. Bold elements need edge coverage and enough space to hold the raised shape. Fine details may remain flat, while puff areas are sequenced to protect the foam and registration.

A better cap order brief

Send the logo, cap style, placement, finished size, machine format, and whether the design is flat, puff, or a combination. Mention the center seam and any maximum sewing field supplied by your production team.
