DST
DST is widely used in commercial embroidery and is accepted by many production systems. It stores stitch commands efficiently, but color information is limited compared with newer formats. Operators commonly use a separate run sheet or PDF reference for thread colors.
PES
PES is commonly associated with Brother and Baby Lock embroidery workflows. It can carry design information used by compatible software and machines. Always confirm the version supported by your equipment.
JEF
JEF is commonly used with Janome embroidery machines. Hoop and machine limitations still matter, so the requested finished dimensions should match a supported sewing field.
EXP and other commercial formats
EXP is used in several commercial workflows, including Melco-related systems. Other formats include VP3, XXX, HUS, TAP, and machine- or software-specific native files. Compatibility should be confirmed rather than assumed.
What to send with a format request
The format alone is not enough to produce a reliable design. Include the exact size, garment, placement, artwork, and any thread or sequence requirements.
Keep a visual proof or production worksheet beside the machine file. It provides context that stitch-only formats may not retain.
